Defining Home

Ever walk into a room and feel “at home”? That’s the feeling that I strive to create in each room at my place. “At home” consists of a mix of textures and patterns – wicker, wood, plants, shells, stone, pottery, glass, metal, chiffon, cotton, and woven fabric. I like the sensuality of the mix – I want a room that begs me to experience it, to reach out and touch its contents.

Spiritual energy is also wrought through the force of contradiction. The collision of new and old, hot and cold, and decorative and plain, all create an electrical current that runs between opposites. To create a naturally balanced living environment, it is necessary that the five elements of wood, water, fire, earth, and metal be represented.”

In my last apartment I had lived there for two years before I had satisfied this goal in all but two rooms—the living room and the guest bedroom. Almost from the first, I had achieved this in the master bath. In the first six months, partially in the master bedroom—completely after a year and a half (rearranged curtains and added poster photos of the California coast to create a more of a seaside retreat). Two months before construction forced me to relocate, the kitchen and dining room (exchanged the travel photos for sepia shots of fruits and vegetables from the local farmer’s market).

Images of a similar style—be they prints, photographs, or postcards—look great clustered together.”

In my new place (been here all of a month as of today), I feel “at home” in my living room (this space was influenced by Peaceful Spaces: Transform Your Home into a Haven of Calm and Tranquility), in my kitchen (this space was heavily influenced by Organized Living), in the sitting alcove in the master bedroom (this space was influenced by The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design), and in my laundry room (I like the fact that everything is organized and in its place-this space was also heavily influenced by Organized Living). I feel almost “at home” in my entry hall (just missing nice green leafy, cat friendly plants for my planters), my master bath (just missing a vertical “window” into a local seascape to balance out the walls), my master bedroom (just missing curtains to soften some strong lines-this space influenced by Feng Shui For Your Home), my dining room (just missing a cabinet to give the space more width-this space heavily influenced by The Feng Shui House Book), and my guest bedroom (just need the cabinet in the dining room so that I can put away the serving dishes and bottles of wine).
